‘Uthmaan said:

“If I were between Paradise and Hell, not knowing to which of them I would be commanded to be taken to, I would wish to be turned to ashes before I knew in which of them I would end up.”

[Nizaam al-Hukm]

“Fear Allaah, for the fear of Allaah is a treasure.”

‘Uthmaan said in a Khutbah one day:

“Oh people! Fear Allaah, for the fear of Allaah is a treasure. The smartest of the people is the one who checks on himself and strives for that which comes after death, strives to acquire some of the light of Allaah for his grave, and fears lest Allaah raise him blind when he had sight (in this world).”

[Saheeh at-Tawtheeq: 107]

“I have found the sweetness of worship in four things…”

“I have found the sweetness of worship in four things:

(1) Performing the obligatory acts of worship enjoined by Allaah;

(2) Avoiding the things forbidden by Allaah;

(3) Enjoining that which is good, seeking the reward from Allaah;

(4) Forbidding that which is evil, fearing the Wrath of Allaah.”

‘Uthmaan bin ‘Affaan said:

“The believer has five types of fear.

The first; that Allaah may take his faith away from him.

The second; that the recording angels may write down something that may expose him on the Day of Resurrection.

The third; that the Shaytaan may cause his deeds to become invalid.

The fourth; that the Angel of Death may come to him without warning.

The fifth; that this world may tempt him and distract him from the Hereafter.”

Dhun-Noorayn said:

“Everything has something to undermine it, and every blessing has something to diminish it.  The thing that undermines this religion and diminishes this blessing is those who criticise a great deal, and those who stab in the back; they show you what you want to see and they conceal that which you dislike. There are wicked like ostriches.”

“A few concise words are sufficient for the wise man…”

Al-Hasan al-Basree said: ‘Uthmaan delivered a speech.  He praised and glorified Allaah, then he said:

“O people! Fear Allaah, for the fear of Allaah is, indeed, a great treasure.  The most intelligent of people, is he who who checks himself, and strives for that which comes after death, and gains from the light of Allaah light to illuminate his grave.  Everyone should worry, lest Allaah resurrect him blind when he had sight before.  A few concise words are sufficient for the wise man, but the person will be called from a distant place.  You should realise that the one with whom Allaah is will not fear anything, but the one against whom Allaah is, what hope can he possess?!”
